Questions and Concerns About Next Week’s CATW

  1. I am concerned about using punctuation correctly.
  2. What is a passing grade?
    • 56 out of a possible 96
  3. How early should we get there?
    • I recommend arriving by 5:50 at the latest.  Remember if I am not there when you arrive it is because I am coming from my previous class in Fiterman and will be there very soon.
  4. Where can I go to study for the test?
    • I have office hours in N751M in the main building next Monday from 4:00 – 5:00.
    • There are many resources on this website.
    • You can go for tutoring in the Basic Skill English Lab (CLICK HERE)
  5. How long or short should a paragraph be?
    • There is no absolute number of sentences a paragraph needs to be.  DO NOT count words or sentences in your essay because that will distract you.  However, most standard paragraphs tend to be between 5 and 13 sentences long.  Focus more on WHAT you are saying, not how many words or sentences you use  to say it.
  6. I am worried about the time limit and that I won’t be able to finish.
    • BUY A WATCH so you can time yourself.  Remember you won’t be able to use your phone in the test room.  I suggest rationing your time so you have enough time to finish.
      • 20 minutes to read and think about the essay
      • 10 minutes to brainstorm, come up with your response, and make an outline
      • 50 minutes to actually write the essay
      • 10 minutes to re-read it and make corrections
  7. I am worried about being late.
    • DON’T BE LATE!  If you arrive late, you will NOT be allowed to take the test and you have lost one of your chances to pass it.  If you have a conflict with another class, have that professor get in touch with me.  If you have a work conflict, you really need to let your boss know how important this exam is for your school career.
  8. Do you recommend writing 5 paragraphs?
    • YES.  You MUST write at LEAST FOUR (4).  Any less than four paragraphs and you are extremely likely to fail.
  9. What is the “formula” for passing the CATW?
    • This is not math class; there is no one formula for writing a passing or effective essay.  Some things you DO need in your essay:
      • An introduction (first paragraph)
      • Summary of the reading (this can go in the introduction)
      • At least two body paragraphs discussing your reaction to the reading
      • A conclusion (last paragraph)
  10. What if I get thirsty or need to use the bathroom during the test?
    • If you leave the room, your test will be voided and not graded.  It will be like you didn’t take it and you will lose one of your chances to pass it.  If you try to sneak food or drink in the test room, the proctors will yell at you and maybe throw you out, in which case your test will be voided.
    • Make sure you eat, drink, and use the restroom BEFORE the test.
  11. What are the main things we are being graded on?
  12. Do you have any other advice that we haven’t covered yet?
    • Try to stay away from just agreeing or disagreeing with the reading.  This is the most basic kind of response and is unlikely to earn you a high or even a passing score.
    • Instead, try asking yourself questions like:
      • Why does this matter?
      • What are the implications of what the author is discussing?
      • How can I apply the author’s ideas in a larger setting?
      • What does this say about (society, people, technology, economics, etc.)?
  13. Does it matter if my writing is messy or I cross a lot of things out?
    • As long as your essay is readable, it is fine.  You are NOT graded on penmanship or neatness.
    • DO NOT try to write a first draft and re-copy it neatly.  DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO THIS.  You WILL run out of time and fail the test.
    • You CAN bring an erasable pen or white-out if you are really worried.
    • DO NOT try to write in pencil and then copy it over with pen.

End-of-Semester Information

Hello All,

Although classes are now over, I will be in my office this week.  My office hours are below:

  • Tuesday 12/16 (today): I am here currently (6:30 PM) and will be here until around 8:30 PM)
  • Thursday 12/18: 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM

My office is N751M inside the English department, which is N751 on the 7th floor of the main building near the first set of elevators and bathrooms.

I will also be on email: jaimeweida@gmail.com

Final exam CATW scores HAVE been reported.  I think everyone who took it already requested their score but you can come see me or email me if you haven’t.

Final grades should be in CUNYFirst around Christmas (12/25).  You DO have to log into CUNYFirst to check your final grade.  The grades are as follows:

  • S = Satisfactory = Passing.  If you get an S you should register for ENG101 in the spring.
  • R = Repeat = Not Passing.  If you get an R you need to register for ENG095 in the spring.

And finally, thank you all for a wonderful semester!  This semester was a bit rough on me and you all were wonderfully patient with me.  I am very proud of all of you: we landed up with a total CATW passing rate of 65%, which is higher than almost any other ENG095 class this semester!  🙂

I wish you all very happy holidays (if you celebrate) and a safe and restful Winter Break!  Stay warm!

Best,

Prof. Jaime Weida

🙂

Reminder About Tomorrow and End-of-Semester Schedule

Hello All,

Don’t forget that we DO have a class tomorrow, Monday 12/15 – granted that I landed up cancelling class too many times this semester, and was less-than-stringent about classes last week, it wouldn’t really be fair for me to make tomorrow’s class a required class.  However:

  • There will be pizza!  🙂
  • I will return all journals that haven’t been picked up yet
  • If you come, sign in, and grab a slice of pizza (if you want), it will count to make up for a missed class earlier the semester
  • If the CATW scores are ready by tomorrow, I will let everyone who took the final exam CATW know how they did

I will also be around during final exam times next week.  My schedule for next week is:

  • Monday 12/15: 4:00 – 5:00 PM in N751M
  • Tuesday 12/16: 3:30 – 8:30 PM in N751M
  • Thursday 12/18: 3:00 – 5:00 PM in N751M

I will also be on email and can let student know their final exam CATW scores by email,

Hope to see many of you tomorrow,

Prof. Jaime Weida

🙂

Film from Thursday

Hello All,

A few of you asked me to post the information about the film we watched in class on Tuesday.  It is called Blackfish and it’s won a number of awards in the past year.  It is instant streaming on Netflix and available on Amazon.  Click the image below for the Amazon link:

Something that makes me feel good about this country…

Hello All,

It’s no secret that I don’t like the racial politics in this country lately as reflected by the Ferguson situation and the Eric Garner decision.  Well, today Congressional workers in Washington, DC walked out of their jobs in protest.  Click the image below to find out more:

There is going to be another protest in NYC starting at Washington Square this Saturday and I will post more information when I have it.

Best,

Hello All,

This is just a reminder that we DO have class today (Thursday 12/11); however, since the final exam CATW is over, we won’t be doing any work.  We will be watching a film.  You will also be able to pick up your journal from me.

REMINDER ABOUT FINAL EXAM CATW TOMORROW

Hello All,

PLEASE DO NOT FORGET THAT WE HAVE OUR FINAL EXAM CATW TOMORROW, TUESDAY 12/9, IN N451 IN THE MAIN BUILDING.

What does this mean?

  • IF YOU PASSED THE MIDTERM CATW, YOU HAVE ANOTHER DAY OFF TOMORROW.
  • If you need to take the final exam CATW, please go to N451 a few minutes before 2:00 tomorrow.  I WILL be there and I’ll have candy for you!

Incidentally, I am REALLY sorry if my not running class today was a problem for anyone.  I got more than a dozen emails from people saying that they couldn’t attend or would rather work on their own.  And, I’ll be honest, because I have so much work to do at the end of the semester I’d rather not just sit in an empty room for almost two hours (which it WAS when I checked earlier).  I DO try to run this class in a way that is respectful of all of you and accommodates your needs.  IF ANYONE WANTS TO SEE ME TOMORROW BEFORE THE FINAL EXAM CATW PLEASE JUST EMAIL ME – I WILL BE HAPPY TO MEET WITH YOU.

All of that being said:

  • IF YOU ARE TAKING THE FINAL EXAM CATW TOMORROW, DO NOT WORRY.  YOU WILL PASS.  I still owe a couple of you an individual email about your practice test from last week, but EVERYONE WHO TOOK IT PASSED.  DO NOT WORRY.

I think this diabetes-inducing picture says it all:

Best,

Prof. Jaime Weida

🙂
